Baby Shower Etiquette: Baby Shower for Second Baby?
Posted by: Kristi on: December 10, 2012
Should I have a baby shower for my second (third, fourth, etc) child?
One question mom’s always want to know if they should have a shower beyond their first baby. The answer I always give is “it depends.”
Did you have a boy the first time and now you are having a girl?
How long ago did you have your last child? More than 3 or 4 years?
Are there many things you need for the new baby that you don’t already have?
Did you get rid of the baby stuff you had previously?
Depending on how you answer these questions, it may be completely appropriate to have a baby shower each time you are pregnant. For instance, say your youngest is 10 years old now and you are pregnant with another. Baby items have changed tremendously since your last child was a baby. Or what if your last child was a girl but now you are having a boy? I don’t think your spouse would appreciate you dressing him in pink blouses. Again, another great reason to have another baby shower.
What if I don’t really need any gifts?
It can be appropriate to have another baby shower, even if you don’t need any gifts. According to a New York Times article, this is called a “Sprinkle” and consists of a smaller get-together than your first baby shower and gifts optional. It is more of a celebration of an upcoming life. From the article:
“A sprinkle, as it turns out, is a smaller party to celebrate second, third or fourth pregnancies….There is this growing mentality of wanting to celebrate every second of parenthood, and sprinkles fit with that trend”
What do you think? Did you have a baby shower past your first child?
